Athletics Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Oakland didn’t set an all-time bonus record Thursday, unlike last year, when the team gave Dominican right-hander Michael Ynoa $4.25 million.

The A’s did, however, get one of their primary targets on the first day of international signings, nabbing 16-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Wilfredo Solano.

“He’s got a little bit of everything,” A’s assistant general manager David Forst told the San Francisco Chronicle. “He’s a switch hitter with some power, great hands, and we think he can stay at shortstop. He was a high-profile guy we targeted early.”

Oakland also signed Wilman “Junior” Martinez, a third baseman, and outfielder Alfred Sosa, who are both 16. All three will report to the A’s facility in the Dominican Republic.

While Solano’s bonus is nothing close…

A’s notebook: Suzuki in conversation for All-Star Game invite

The A’s played their last home game of the first half of the season Wednesday, which means at least one member of the team will return home in a few weeks as an All-Star. Who that might be is still up in the air, but a few names floated around the clubhouse before and after the A’s 5-1 afternoon victory over Detroit.

Promising rookies square off in Oakland

Two rookie pitchers who figure to have bright futures ahead will oppose one another when the Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics begin a three-game series tonight at the Coliseum.

Athletics Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

After 60 days on the DL with a calf strain, second baseman Mark Ellis will return to Oakland’s starting lineup, manager Bob Geren said on Friday.

With Ellis at second, Adam Kennedy will play either at third or at first Sunday, probably depending on Jason Giambi’s availability at first base. His past three starts have come at DH.

To make room for Ellis, the A’s are likely to demote either Daric Barton or Jack Hannahan. Barton might make more sense, if the A’s would like the 23-year-old to get regular at-bats, plus Hannahan can play third and first, and he’s the better fielder.

However, the move also could come elsewhere. If Nomar Garciaparra remains unable to do more than pinch hit because of his chronic calf problems, there is a chance that the team will opt to…

Johnson wins No. 302 (AP)

Oakland Athletics catcher Kurt Suzuki(notes), left, and first baseman Bobby Crosby(notes), right, try to settle pitcher Gio Gonzalez(notes) in the second inning of a baseball game against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, in Oakland, Calif.

Randy Johnson is rejuvenated with the San Francisco Giants. He follows reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum in the rotation, then sees nine-game winner Matt Cain pitch after him. “I can't say I feel any younger watching them pitch,” Johnson said. “I'm enjoying this year as much as any year I've ever enjoyed because I'm making my pitches.” Johnson earned…

Athletics Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Gio Gonzalez on Wednesday night got his first chance to start for the A’s this season, but it didn’t turn out well. Instead, the game underscored the fact that, more than a year after coming to the A’s in the Nick Swisher trade, Gonzalez has yet to find a regular spot on the big-league roster.

The left-hander gave up six runs, four earned, in 3 2/3 innings after being called up to face the Giants at the Coliseum. After eight big-league starts, Gonzalez’s ERA is an unsightly 9.38.

At 23, Gonzalez is older than three members of the current rotation, and he clearly has fallen behind Vin Mazzaro, Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson and Josh Outman on Oakland’s radar. There is talk around baseball that Gonzalez might be better suited to the bullpen.

In each of his previous…

Athletics starter Outman goes on DL (AP)
Josh Outman hopes his elbow injury was caught early enough that it won't threaten his rookie season. Tim Lincecum had to work a little harder for this one. Even a few jams weren't enough to faze him. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner pitched a seven-hitter in another complete game against Oakland, Pablo Sandoval and Edgar Renteria each hit RBI doubles and the San Francisco Giants beat the Athletics 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Outman to miss next start
Outman to miss next start After leaving Friday’s game with tightness in his left forearm, A’s starter Josh Outman told MLB.com on Monday that he doesn’t see any way he’ll make his next start.

Athletics Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Gio Gonzalez will make Wednesday’s start against the Giants, and Josh Outman is likely to be placed on the disabled list.

The A’s announced Gonzalez as the scheduled starter after Tuesday night’s game, but the move was fairly apparent by that point because the other candidate, long reliever Edgar Gonzalez, had worked two innings earlier in the evening.

Gonzalez is 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA at Sacramento, and he struck out 10 his last time out. This will be his third call-up of the season.

Outman’s scheduled contrast MRI was canceled because of a local power outage. He’ll get that test Wednesday, and then he cannot throw for three days afterward. For that reason, Outman’s next start also is in jeopardy no matter what the MRI shows, which makes him a logical DL candidate…

Rookie left-hander Josh Outman will miss his start Wednesday for the Oakland Athletics with tightness in his throwing arm. Outman underwent an MRI on Monday on his elbow area and is scheduled for another more extensive test Wednesday. The A's had hoped he would be examined Tuesday but there wasn't an appointment available.
